Content Management that can withstand the plundering hoards

Themes, layouts and portable designs

A theme supplies site-wide presentation around your pages. It includes page layouts, shared parts, styles and optional bundled images/fonts. Begin with the theme guide for selecting, copying and editing a design.

Layouts and shared parts

Choose a default site layout and optional per-page overrides. Layout names can contain spaces and Unicode characters; renaming a layout preserves existing selections. Shared headers and footers let one design change apply across pages. Save theme changes explicitly, then publish to change the public website.

Bundled Viking Light and Viking Ink themes are read-only starting points. Use Save as copy to make a custom version. Original page styling clears the selected site theme. Preview a design with the sample site and your own saved pages before applying it.

Bindings

Bindings are placeholders replaced with real content in preview and publication.

Binding Displays
Page content The page's content; each layout needs exactly one.
Page title The current page's title.
Featured image The current page's cover and alt text; omitted when unset.
Site title / Site description Values from site settings.
Navigation The menu generated from page settings.
Copyright Copyright text using the UTC year at rendering time.
Header / Footer The theme's shared parts.

The canvas labels bindings so you can place them. Use Preview to see their rendered values. Edit the page to change Page content, settings to change site values, and shared templates to change the header/footer.

Bundled assets

Theme images and fonts travel with the theme. Use the theme workspace's asset controls rather than a site's media-library URLs for reusable designs. Supported extensions are .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .webp, .avif, .woff and .woff2, with a limit of 2 MiB per file. Use unique filenames made of letters, numbers, hyphens or underscores plus the extension. Reference fonts in the shared stylesheet using viking-asset:filename.woff2.

Transfer and remove a design

Download theme bundle exports the saved design as .viking-theme.zip. Import theme bundle installs a new theme identifier. Preview, apply and publish after importing. Keep a full storage backup for pages, uploads and the rest of the editable project.

To replace an existing design, import with a distinct identifier and select the new theme. Delete an unused custom theme after switching away from it. Bundled and active themes are protected from deletion. Retained public releases keep their own design and asset bytes.

For building a bundle, consult the separate theme-authoring reference.
